Yucca Valley Wrestling Club

Spring/Summer 2009

Are you a UFC and MMA fan? Have you ever wondered why so many of your favorite fighters spent most of their lives first as wrestlers? Did you know that wrestling does not require you to be certain “height,” “weight,” or “athletic ability” – is open to both boys and girls – and requires only heart to excel? Did you know that in wrestling you command your own destiny; that not being a team sport, you will get all the playing time you want and your own success and enjoyment cannot be compromised by anyone else? Did you know that you were going to join the Yucca Valley Wrestling Club?!

Wrestling is a great sport, and perhaps the oldest there is. There is a reason why it has been the main event ever since the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, and is currently the national sport in many countries around the world. If you have not known yet about wrestling, then I am excited to help you discover our sport!

Welcome to the Yucca Valley Wrestling Club. I am Coach Brandon Whitbread, a teacher and wrestling coach at Yucca Valley High School and a lifelong wrestler. I am CPR/First Aid certified under the American Heart Association, and a certified coach under the California Coaches Association.

Below I have shared the information on our club.   Please look it over, do more research if you would like, and contact me if you have any questions. Please note that I will host an informational meeting in my classroom (G6) at the high school on Monday 3/16/09 at 6:00PM.

Yours truly,

Brandon Whitbread

WHAT IS IT?
  • The Yucca Valley Wrestling Club. We train middle and high school aged, beginner and advanced, boys and girls of all sizes and “athletic abilities” for competition in Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
  • We are an AAU club, and train wrestlers for competitions in both the AAU Freestyle circuit in the Inland Empire and desert area (the Southern Pacific Wrestling Association www.spa-aau.org), and the USA Wrestling circuit also in the Inland Empire (Inland Empire Wrestling Association www.ca-usaw.org).
  • Wrestlers compete in age and weight divisions. The AAU age divisions are: kids (ages 5-12), junior high (ages 12-14), senior high (ages 15-17), and open (ages 18+). Weight divisions within these age bands vary with the age group, but span about every 5-8 pounds, with slightly wider range in the upper weights. USA Wrestling has similar age and weight divisions. Both organizations host one-time-event competitions as well as qualifying, regional, and national events.

WHEN IS IT?
  • Practices are at Yucca Valley High School in the wrestling room Mondays and Wednesdays 2:30-4:30PM while Morongo Unified Schools are in session.  Over the summer they will be on Wednesdays from 1:15-3:45PM.
  • Competitions are on Saturdays at alternating sites in the Inland Empire and desert areas (a schedule is attached to this document). Coach Whitbread has highlighted the events that he will attend. Wrestlers will be expected to attend these events, but are also encouraged to attend events on their own.

WHAT DOES IT COST?
  • In order to participate in practice as well as competitions, all wrestlers MUST purchase and keep on their person a current $12 AAU membership card (this is an insurance card, covering their practices and competitions). The cards can be purchased online at www.spa-aau.org (see the attached flyer for further instructions.) Tournament fees of $10 will be collected at the doors of the events. The fees go towards medals for placing wrestlers, and towards the staffing of the tournaments.
  • (USA Wrestling cards, optional to purchase, enable individuals to compete in USA Wrestling events. They are $30 online, or $40 at the event door. Similar tournament fees apply.)

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
  • Wrestlers must wear gym clothes, mouth guard, and wrestling shoes.* (Wrestling shoes are a required piece of equipment in competition in order to prevent injury to other wrestlers and to avoid damaging the wrestling mats. For this reason they will be required for practice as well. Sporting goods stores like Big 5 stock them.)
  • Shower gear is also required; soap and towel. Wrestlers must shower after practice to maintain proper hygiene. They may shower in their shorts or a bathing suit if they wish.

WHAT ABOUT TRANSPORTATION?
  • Transportation to and from practices and competitions is not provided. Wrestlers and their parents are strongly encouraged to network and plan carpools.

WHEN IS THE INFORMATIONAL MEETING TO GET MORE DETAILS?
  • Monday, 3/16/09 at 6:00PM in room G6 at Yucca Valley High School. Wrestlers and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
